Hydrogen sulfide is a natural component of crude oils and
may be present in significant quantities in certain crudes. H2S is expected to
remain a problem in crude oils as the market trends toward heavier crudes with
higher sulfur contents. Because of exposure risks associated with high levels
of H2S, many refineries and terminals have H2S specifications that must be met
before a crude oil is transferred into storage. In these cases, treatment with
an H2S scavenger is necessary in order to reduce H2S to within acceptable
limits. When treating crude oil for H2S, it is critical to consider the
