FAQ on OMNI Analytics and Condenser Performance Monitoring

Measuring condenser back-pressure and cleanliness factor is a good start. But OMNI Analytics can provide a significantly more complete picture of condenser operations—finding problems before they start and improving your overall operations.

Many companies offer condenser performance monitoring tools to their customers. Most are automated alarm systems capable of displaying your data online. When a parameter measurement falls outside its specified range, an alarm is sent. Users then access their data online and troubleshoot. The OMNI Condenser Performance Programme is different. When measurements fall outside of a range or our Predictive Analytics models indicate conditions are right for a problem to occur in the future, our System Assurance Centre personnel — highly educated engineers with knowledge, skills and experience in reviewing power plant condenser data — review all the available data. If they find a need to follow-up, they contact you and/or your Nalco Water sales engineer to determine next steps. 

We work with Chemstaff, a leading power industry consulting firm, on the implementation of the OMNI Condenser Performance Programme. The Chemstaff representative will meet with your PI administrator, review your condenser specification data, configure the template containing the PI tags needed to analyse your data and ensure it uploads correctly to the secure Cloud. They will also ensure the data transfer to our servers from the Cloud occurs properly and that the reports are formatting properly. 
Compliance with NERC/CIP is defined by each customer based on their understanding of the regulations. We have worked with third-party NERC/CIP consultants to ensure the highest level of security and compliance with current rules. We address any customer concerns by providing clear documentation: what the process is, how data is transferred, etc. We also have on-call experts who can discuss, in technical detail, what is involved in transferring data, encryption and authentication.

Nalco Water will still provide the full menu of products and services: feeding and controlling the right chemical programme and monitoring key leading indicators. But with this new OMNI Analytics approach, in addition to reporting these technical details, we now can monitor and report the impact of what we do on customers’ big picture metrics, the things their management cares about. We can quickly detect changes in those metrics, the OMNI Condenser Performance Programme is focused on the water treatment aspects of condenser performance, and the OMNI report delivers actionable information that helps customers maintain high efficiency, reliability and low operating costs. So OMNI Analytics changes the conversation from a discussion about leading indicators to a discussion of how the water treatment programme impacts the financial performance of the power plant.
