Ecolab, a global leader in water, hygiene and energy technologies and services, received the Green Mark GoldPLUS Award from Singapore’s Building Construction Authority (BCA) for the sustainable features installed throughout its new Asia Pacific headquarters. The Green Mark GoldPLUS Award honours companies for designing and constructing buildings that are smarter, more climate-responsive and energy- and resource-efficient and offer heathier indoor environments.
The renovation for Ecolab’s new office, located on 16th level of JEM Office Tower (JEM) at 50 Jurong Gateway Road, included installing energy-efficient lighting fixtures, motion sensors and nano solar film, which reduces solar heat gain inside the office. Ecolab also invested in energy-efficient and environmentally friendly equipment. Ninety-eight percent of Ecolab’s IT equipment are Energy Star-certified and 80 percent of the company’s office furniture — cabinets, chairs, carpet, partitions and sound insulation — are certified by the Singapore Green Building Council.
“We are already seeing benefits of our investment in sustainability,” said Sean Toohey, president of Ecolab’s Asia Pacific region. “We reduced our electricity use by 40% since we moved to JEM.”
BCA praised Ecolab for implementing resource-saving features, especially the use of energy-efficient lighting, which contributes to 63% energy savings. Other features include creating designated after-hour work zones to reduce use of lighting and air conditioning; installing teleconferencing facilities in each meeting room to reduce carbon footprint generated from travelling; and emailing employees copies of a Green Office User guide to remind them of sustainability tips such as recycling and energy reduction.
“Promoting efficiency and environmental sustainability is at the heart of what we do at Ecolab. For our new headquarters, we relocated to JEM so we could follow that ethos to create a sustainable and eco-friendly environment where our associates can thrive and do their best work,” Toohey said.
In mid-2017, when Ecolab decided to relocate from International Business Park to a new office, the company selected JEM for the building’s sustainability record. The building is the first mixed-use retail and office development to receive the BCA Green Mark Platinum 4.0 award, the highest standard for sustainability in the country.
The office complex is also the first development in Singapore to use an innovative chilled water configuration to deliver industry-leading energy reduction for air conditioning.
Launched in 2005, the BCA Green Mark Scheme aims to promote sustainability in Singapore’s built environment and raise environmental awareness among developers, designers and builders from design through to construction.
“We really appreciate JEM’s sustainable design, from using landscaping to reduce the sun’s impact on the building, to harvesting rainwater for irrigation and recycling water, the development’s vision is very much in line with Ecolab’s beliefs,” Toohey said.
